PROTECTOSIL® CIT CORROSION PROTECTION
Buildings, bridges, multi-story car parks, and similar reinforced concrete structures are among the most significant private and public investments. Protectosil® CIT is the most powerful silane-based corrosion prevention system designed to combat the degradation of aging reinforcing steel exposed to moisture and chlorides. Water is just one of the causes of concrete degradation. The most severe impact on the degradation of reinforcing steel and the occurrence of structural damage stems from chloride-induced deterioration. Water molecules bind electrostatically to concrete; this binding increases chloride transmission, and the reinforcing steel begins to actively degrade. Developed by Evonik, Protectosil® CIT penetrates deep into concrete to establish a chemical bond with the steel surface, decisively preventing the progression of corrosion.
SYSTEM ADVANTAGES
Chlorıde Barrıer
With its deep hydrophobation property, it establishes a durable barrier within the reinforced concrete section that decisively blocks chloride ions from reaching the reinforcing steel.
Actıve Corrosıon Mıtıgatıon
Chemically halts the existing rusting reaction on the reinforcement and effectively prevents the formation of new corrosion cells with high performance.
Crack Tolerance
Does not compromise protection performance even in micro-cracks up to approximately 0.3 mm, preventing the active degradation of the steel.
Structural Lıfe Extensıon
Safely extends the service life of critical infrastructure heavily exposed to chloride attacks, such as bridges, ports, and car parks, by decades.
Molecular Penetratıon
Its liquid formulation penetrates deep into the capillary pores of the concrete, forming a molecular protective film directly on the surface of the reinforcing steel.
Breathabılıty Protectıon
Does not obstruct water vapor permeability; it allows internal moisture to exit the concrete while blocking the ingress of chloride-laden water from the outside.
Scıentıfıc Test Results
ASTM G-109 CORROSION RATE TEST
Protectosil® CIT exhibits unparalleled resistance against both electrostatic water binding and chloride exposure. According to data from independent research laboratories, while other protective products on the market remained ineffective, Protectosil® CIT successfully protected the steel by keeping the corrosion current density below the critical threshold.
CORRELATION BETWEEN TIME & PERFORMANCE
As a result of a 12-week accelerated corrosion test conducted by WJE Associates on reinforced concrete sections with cracks of approximately 0.3 mm, unprotected specimens rusted rapidly, whereas specimens protected with Protectosil® CIT showed no traces of active corrosion.
Global Case Studıes
Monroe County Parking Garage Application: In tests conducted in 1996, the corrosion rate of the structure was measured at 0.68 µA/cm² (significantly above the corrosion risk threshold). Immediately following the application of Protectosil® CIT, this corrosion rate dropped below the 0.1 µA/cm² level (safe passive limit).
Galleria Cianca (Swiss Alps): In order to permanently stop reinforcement degradation, 500 g/m² of Protectosil® CIT was applied to the concrete surface of the tunnel. Corrosion progress was monitored in real-time by collecting data every 30 minutes via an installed datalogger system.
Corrosıon Protectıon Product Catalog
Protectosil® corrosion protection systems offer specialized and award-winning solutions that extend structural life, ranging from liquid formulation applications to the world's first dry concrete admixtures.
Protectosıl® CIT
Significantly reduces the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel as the active ingredient reacts with both the cement matrix and the steel surface. This is the most powerful liquid formulation of the systems.
Protectosıl® DRY CIT
A corrosion protection product in powder form. Honored with numerous innovation awards, it holds the title of the world's first solid concrete admixture for reinforced concrete corrosion protection.
Protectosıl® WA CIT
Protects steel-reinforced concrete, fair-faced concrete, and precast concrete elements. The product disperses homogeneously within the concrete mix and also reduces drying shrinkage.
